Creating a revolution is a messy and painful process. That's shown very clearly in the classic Broadway musical, "1776."
Directed by Bil Neal, the ARTS production depicts...with some events fictionalized for dramatic effect...how the founding fathers debated rising up against England to form the United States.
John Adams (Clint McElroy) is the story's central character. His efforts to persuade his colleagues in the Continental Congress drive the show.
"1776" premiered on Broadway back in 1969. It garnered positive reviews and won three Tony awards, including Best Musical. After more than 12-hundred performances it finally closed...but was revived in 1997. The cast is made up almost entirely of men...and the action mainly takes place in Independence Hall.
Although their names are now legend, "1776" takes great pains to show the people who signed the Declaration of Independence as real men who struggled with the enormous responsibility of creating what would become the greatest nation on Earth.
