The American Lung Association says seven metropolitan areas in West Virginia are among the 25 worst in the country for year-round particle pollution. The association's annual State of the Air report released Wednesday ranks the Weirton-Steubenville, Ohio, metro area 12th worst for year-round particle pollution. Charleston is tied for 17th with the Dayton, Ohio, and Columbus, Ga., metro areas. Wheeling is tied for 20th with the Parkersburg-Marietta, Ohio, and Huntington-Ashland, Ky. metro areas. The Fairmont-Clarksburg and Martinsburg-Hagerstown, Md., metro areas are tied for 24th. The Beckley-Oak Hill metro area is among the nation's cleanest for 24-hour particle pollution, ranking 13th. The association also examined ozone in several West Virginia counties. Greenbrier County received the highest grade, an A. The lowest grade, a D, went to Hancock County.
