Smoke detectors are the one thing officials said could have possibly prevented the tragic loss of life in Saturday's house fire that killed nine people.
According to Charleston city fire code, property managers must have smoke detectors on each story of a house and one in each bedroom.
The house that burned only had three smoke detectors. Two didn't work, the other was not mounted correctly, it was found on a kitchen counter.
Doloris Shamblin, the landlord, did take the steps to have the home inspected last month, but when the inspector showed up, no adults were home and a child asked them to come back later.
