The federal government is on the ground assessing the damage in the areas hard hit by the latest flooding and FEMA has also stepped in to help those affected by the tornadoes that hit early this month.

A federal disaster has been declared in nearly a dozen West Virginia counties affected by the tornadoes and storms that hit in the beginning of March. FEMA will help those counties repair roads and tax payer funded projects, but in the hard hit areas of Lincoln and Wayne Counties help from FEMA is available to the people, anyone who suffered damage from the tornadoes. But FEMA officials say so far the response has been slow.

"Don't disqualify yourself, don't wonder if you are eligible, call FEMA," Frank Blake with FEMA says. "Even if they have registered with the National Guard, the police department, the fire department, they think they've applied for help and they haven't. The only way to receive federal assistance is you must apply with FEMA."

While the state and federal government are working on assisting in the clean up from the tornadoes, serious flooding struck Southern West Virginia last week. FEMA is now on the ground in Logan, Mingo and areas of Lincoln Counties to determine if they will step in and help folks there.

"We've got to put feet on the ground and go in and assess the damage and provide that information to the Governor," Blake says.

If you live in Lincoln or Wayne counties and were affected by the tornadoes call FEMA to see if you qualify for assistance at 1-800-621-FEMA. You can also register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

We'll let you know as soon as we find out if FEMA decides to help in any other areas hit by the recent floods.
