Nearly 10,000 people are experiencing a dry spell after a water leak. Now they're hopeful things will soon be back to normal. "It's strange. You're used to turning on the spigot, and there's nothing," said Carolyn Mallett of Nitro. Mallett lives down the street from the main leak on Locust Street. She's been without water and counting down the minutes until things are normal again. "I had to heat water to wash my dishes. And we can't take a bath of course," she said. It's a watery mess that has left a widespread impact on customers throughout Kanawha, Putnam, and Lincoln counties. The problem started Thursday when crews found a leak in a twelve inch valve that feeds into a river crossing Nitro to St. Albans. West Virginia American Water has been working on the leak since then by shutting off certain valves. But to fix the problem they had to shut off even more valves to lower the water covering the leak, cutting off water to thousands of people. "We have a thirty inch, a twenty four inch, a sixteen inch, and a ten inch, so a lot of water has to be shut down to make this repair," said spokeswoman for WV American Water, Laura Jordan. American Water set up shop at the Nitro Moose Lodge and Winfield High School to give people water. By 3:00 p.m., people were left scrambling. "You just have to go to the store and get some water and get some where they're passing it out. You just don't know what's going on," said Arthur Lawrence. By 6:00 p.m., the water started to drain around the leak and crews were able to reopen the main valves throughout the counties giving customers a little more hope of seeing water again. All areas who were effected by the water outage are still under a boil water advisory until further notice. American Water will be passing out water at the Nitro Moose Lodge and Winfield High School on Sunday. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
