The mail is being used as a pipeline for illegal drugs in Southern West Virginia. State Police say they've recently confiscated several shipments of bath salts in the Chapmanville area.
More than a thousand dollars worth of bath salts have been confiscated so far, all sent through the US Postal Service and UPS.
State Police in Logan County say they caught one person with a box of freshly delivered bath salts and that lead to an even bigger discovery. They stopped four other shipments of the drugs. The alleged recipients of the drugs have now all been arrested; 33-year-old Jesse Adkins, 55-year-old Nicholas Savas,
30-year-old Ted Topeka, Jr., 36-year-old Jeffrey Cline and 26-year-old Coty Vance. The suspects are from the Chapmanville area. Savas is from Florida.
They're all charged with possession of the drugs with the intent to distribute, police believe they were ordering the drugs so they could turn around and sell them on the street.
"We've collected almost $1,000 dollars in bath salts which is a lot considering they're not real expensive," Trooper S.A. Belt says. "But they are dangerous so when you get a large amount it keeps it off the streets, keeps the public safe."
The drugs are coming from several states including Ohio, South Carolina and Florida. Bath salts are banned in each of those states, including here in West Virginia, but police say the abuse of the synthetic drug really hasn't stopped.
"Even though they're illegal, it's still a big problem down here," Trooper Belt says.
State police are working with authorities in the other states to track down the shippers. Everyone arrested could also face federal charges for shipping the drugs through the mail.
