More than a dozen people were forced to leave two Putnam county motels after a possible carbon monoxide (CO) leak. It happened Wednesday at the American Inn and Budget Inn off the Hurricane Exit. The owner of the buildings called the city inspector to look at both properties because of the fatal leak a few months ago at the Holiday Inn Express in South Charleston. More than a dozen people were evacuated from both buildings after the inspector found several electrical and fire code violations. Perhaps the most disturbing was in a pipe connected to the hot water tank. Investigators say the pipe contained many holes that could have leaked CO into the motels' rooms. Jay Adkins lives at the Budget Inn with his two year old daughter. He says a possible CO leak scares him, and shouldn't even be an issue. "As big of a place as this is, you know, they should just take better care and watch out for stuff like this," he said. Investigators found no levels of carbon monoxide in the building, but they turned off all utilities and shut down the motels until they're ruled safe. Eyewitness News was told major violations were found throughout both the American Inn and Budget Inn. The inspector says they could have been there for several years. "I don't think it should've been open in the first place. I think it should have been closed down a long time ago," said Julie Raines of Hurricane. "And if he don't give me my money back or put me in a place, I got a two year old here and I'm stuck," said Adkins. No word on when or if the occupants will be allowed back in the motels.
