A little boy's life was cut short while trying to seek help for his mother.
11-year old Jahlil Clements was left fighting for his life Saturday night after being hit by a car along I-77. All because he was trying to help his mom. Police say Ethan Samuel Chic-Colbert was beating Jahlil's mom inside their car.
She managed to pull off to the side of the road, and that's when Ethan allegedly took her out of the car and started to drag her. Jahlil got out of the car and tried to flag down someone to help. But tragically, a driver didn't see him.
"We never thought something like this would happen in a thousand years, you know," said Jahlil's great grandmother, Estella Nappier.
After the young boy was hit, police say Ethan ran and then finally turned himself into police a few hours later. In the meantime, Jahlil was rushed to the hospital with serious head injuries.
He was clinging to life while his family tried to comprehend. "Domestic violence...you know...it tears apart families. My baby shouldn't be laying in that hospital," said Jahlil's grandmother, Thomasina Clements.
A young boy just trying to help his mom, but in the end he is the biggest victim in the alleged abusive relationship.
"If anything happens, I know my grandson loved me and I loved him," said Clements.
The driver does not face any charges since he did not see Jahlil.
There were three other kids in the car at the time of the accident. Ethan is charged with four counts of child neglect creating risk of bodily injury or death.
