The Century Aluminum plant in Ravenswood sits idle...with just a skeleton crew inside taking care of basic maintenance issues.
But that could change now that the company has a tentative deal to restore health care benefits for retirees.
A bill offering tax credits to Century is similar to one that failed last year. But with the retirees now taken care of...there is plenty of support to pass the measure which would offset initial losses during the restart...and offer Century a safeguard against skyrocketing power prices.
With the legislative session winding down, lawmakers will have to maneuver through some procedural hoops to get the bill to the governor.
Members of the upper chamber say they're prepared to move the Century bill through to help get hundreds back to work.
