Latisha Ross is a Special Olympics athlete at Wayne High School. She says, "You never know what you're up against." She's been practicing hard with her team for the annual Wayne County basketball tournament going on this week at the high school. "I can run real fast which that's a good thing and I'm good at making shots."
There are 32 teams from elementary, middle and high school participating this year.
Wayne County Special Olympics Director Joy Bailey says, "It's a lot of work, and the kids look forward to it and they start training around December, and they start asking about it at the beginning of school when can we start they really love it and it helps them. It makes them feel very important."
Some of the teams are looking to avenge past losses. Bailey says, "They remember teams from last year. How can we beat them? There's a little bit of strategy to it."
For Ross, it's confidence. She says, "During practice I've made almost I made all good shots I've only missed a couple of times. "
For teammate Kendra Skeens, it's not just about winning. She tells us, "It's just a game. I don't care if we win or not."
No matter who wins, these athletes sure are making the most of each shot.
The championship will be Friday at Tolsia High School. The champion will get to participate in the state tournament in Morgantown.
