The Bluestone Dam was built in the 1940's by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Recent geological surveys of the dam have ruled that the dam no longer meet's "probable maximum flood standards, which means there’s a slim chance of it failing.
Slim- but Bill Kershner, WVa. Homeland Security, said it’s still a possibility.
“We don’t think it will happen, but we have to be prepared in case,” Kershner said.
During a high water scenario, fractures, in the bed rock would allow the water force to push the dam forward creating a threat to what's down stream in particular, the Kanawha Valley.
The Army Corps of Engineers are working on a project to secure the dam deep into the earth's surface. Currently they are drilling anchors at an angle through the dam into the bed rock.
Engineers are in phase two of the project, they hope to have it completed near 2025.
