Elkview , Kanawha County , West Virginia
For nearly a month, an Elkview family has been dealing with heartbreak after losing a man who meant everything to them and going days and weeks without answers about who killed him.
47-year old Dennis Glen James and his girlfriend were crossing Elk River Road to their house when a car hit and killed James. The car didn't stop and since then, James' family has been desperate for the driver to come forward.
"I just don't understand how people can run up and down the road, hit a person. Not only hit him, but kill him," said James' uncle, Joe Dennis.
"Why did you just leave him there to die? Seconds could have saved him. Who knows," asked James' sister, Christina Hawk.
An extensive investigation led police to an arrest on Thursday night of 22-year old Lynsey Taylor of Elkview. Police say Taylor claims she hit a deer the night after the incident, but police say the damage to her car is consistent with what caused James' head injury.
It's a break in the case that his family has been waiting for. But still, they're left with many questions.
"I just like to ask the lady, how can she do that? How can she drive up and down the road as if nothing happened," said Dennis.
Taylor remains in jail on a $200,000 bond. But to James' family, the arrest still doesn't bring closure.
"It's hard when you lose a family member and you have time to say goodbye. But with Dennis, we did not have time to say goodbye. That was taken from us," said James' sister-in-law, Tracy James.
Deputies say surveillance video and receipts show that Taylor lied about her whereabouts the night James was hit and killed.
Investigators also say more arrests are pending.
