Lincoln County's replacement sheriff, Jerry Alford says he is resigning due to a conflict of interest. This comes just a week after Alford was selected for the position. The Lincoln County Commission held a special meeting Thursday morning to formally accept his resignation. Alford would have replaced Lincoln County Sheriff Jerry Bowman, who must resign by March. New applicants for sheriff will have until 12pm on March 1st to be considered. ------------------------------------- We now know who will be replacing Lincoln County Sheriff Jerry Bowman by next month. Jerry Alford, a lawyer will take over as Sheriff. Myrl Gue will replace Donald Whitten as the County Clerk. Gue is the Mayor of West Hamlin and a retired railroad conductor. Thomas Ramey took part in interviews and votes for sheriff, but did not participate in the vote for the new County Clerk. ------------------------------------- Replacing Lincoln County Sheriff Jerry Bowman and Clerk Donald Whitten is generating more controversy. County resident David Miller says these commissioners should not be deciding who replaced them. He said: "The courthouse gang should resign immediately so Lincoln County can move forward! " Lincoln Country Commissioners narrowed the list of candidates for interim replacements for both Thursday. Bowman has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to hijack the May 2010 primary with fraudulent absentee ballots. Whitten has agreed to plead guilty to lying to a state investigator. But Eyewitness News has reported that Commissioner Thomas Ramey is a "known person" in the federal information who allegedly was involved with the illegal absentee ballots. He has not been charged. Standup. " It's my constitutional duty to follow through as county commissioner. I will do that." His lawyer, Greg Campbell ,said Ramey has a presumption of innocence and added 'what the hell is he supposed to do? Roll over and die? " Replacements are expected to be named Friday after interviews with 4 candidates for sheriff and two county clerk candidates. Commissioner Charles Vance said Ramey should not be voting. Commissioner Charles McCann had no problem with Ramey's picking new interim officer holders. Whitten's resignation takes effect May 29th. Bowman's plea deal requires him to quit by March 7th.
