The city user fee has been a hot topic with folks in Huntington for years, and this year is no different.
This years budget proposes an increase of the city user fee from $3.00 a week to $5.00.
Mayor Kim Wolfe is openly against the increase, but as they await a court decision on whether or not they can implement a one percent occupation tax, he says there's really no other choice. "I'm not a fan of user fees or municipal fees, but it's what we have to work with."
Most folks we talked to are against the fee and raising it. Erik Wells says, "That's preposterous. That's absurd, and I think that I'm being ripped off."
Jack Perry tells us, "I didn't like the user fee when it first started because I felt like it was taxation without representation. Now all the sudden because it's a fee they can go up anytime they want."
A lot of the folks who are against the user fee say they would support the one percent occupation tax. Woods recommends not taxing the lowest levels, but after that he says, "You should probably impose a tax on like based on income levels, you know?"
Perry says, "That's something I could get on board with. I don't make near as much as some people, but I make more than others. If it's one percent tax, it's a tax. If I don't like the tax I can move out of the city."
Also highlighted in this year's budget, six proposed firefighter positions, as the city anticipates 14 retirements from the fire department. Also, 100-thousand dollars could address facility needs in the departments six stations.
Good news for those of you who dealing with potholes- one million dollars is proposed for paving and pavement preservation.
