Students at a Putnam County high school are mourning the loss of a fellow student Wednesday morning. A 16-year old boy was hit and killed by a train shortly after the school day on Tuesday afternoon.
Hurricane High School Junior, Jacob Ball was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a CSX train behind the school.
Police say Jacob was walking along the train tracks near Teays Valley Road around 4pm Tuesday. Friends of Jacob say he would always walk around with headphones in his ears. Investigators think that may be the reason why Jacob didn't hear the train coming. Several students were around when the accident happened.
A Facebook page has been created in Jacob's memory; it's titled "In Memory Of Jacob Ball 02/07/1995 to 01/31/2012."
Counselors are at Hurricane High School and the Middle School Wednesday to help students during this loss.
Hurricane Police have now confirmed that a 16-year-old Jacob Ball a Hurricane High School student was hit and killed by a train along Teays Valley Road in Hurricane.
Friends at the scene say the boy walked the tracks often and most likely had headphones in and didn't hear the train's whistle.
