A third grade class at Point Harmony Elementary in Cross Lanes piled into a gym for a special assembly, Friday afternoon. Little did the students know, it was all for a third grade school student, Ryan Scarberry.
Ryan has no idea his dad, a West Virginia National Guardsman just returned from Afghanistan on Friday morning. Ryan hasn't seen his dad in nearly a year.
"Every time I woke up I would just thank God that I had my family and friends. And thank God that sometimes there was someone on the other end of that phone," said WV National Guard Member, Staff Sgt. Moses Scarberry.
Staff Sgt. Scarberry says he kept in contact with his wife, Bethany, Ryan, and his little girl Raelynn through Skype and pictures. Even though he couldn't be with his family, he says his fellow troops were a support system.
"A lot of the times they would get me through the day just talking about my family or talking about what my kids were doing or how big my daughter was getting," explained Scarberry.
But Friday, Moses and his son didn't have to wait any longer. The school set up an assembly to honor Ryan's dad as a hero. Still thinking his dad was overseas, Ryan accepted an award on behalf of his father. But really, his dad was just steps away.
"Words can't even put into what it felt like after being apart for a year. It was just good to have us all back together under one roof," said Bethany Scarberry.
Moses is now happy and humbled to return home to a hero's welcome. "Most people think that we're heroes. That's pretty good. I'll take that."
