Every time it rains, it pours in Hometown in Putnam County.
According to residents, the problem is originating in clogged culverts or ditches. They're abundant. You can find one in nearly every yard. Doris Davis and Louise Barnett both live in Hometown. Doris says the ditches are filled with debris preventing the rain from properly draining.
"You never know if it's going to come up into your house or not. And what I've been told it's been up to the door of the house a couple of times," said resident, Doris Davis.
Louise Barnett believes the problem is originating from something else. "The water problem is coming off the hill up there. And I don't see no reason to spend money cleaning out ditches when all the water is coming off the roadway."
Regardless of where the flooding is originating, the Putnam County Commission has partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to pinpoint the problem.
"Our problem is that takes a huge portion of the funding that was set aside. So now we fear we won't have enough money to do the actual work," explained commissioner, John Haynes.
Commissioner Haynes says they will seek an additional $15,000 from the Community Participation Grant so they can afford to get the work done. But whether or not the county will be granted the money is unknown.
