Another arrest has been made in a violent crime in Boone County, where police say five people were held hostage, a woman was repeatedly raped and beaten and then the home was set on fire.
Melissa Breedlove is the latest arrest, she was hiding from our cameras and crying as she was taken into court. But Melissa boldly spoke out to Eyewitness News Tuesday admitting that she had hit the victim, Chandra Clark, as Chandra escaped her burning home after police say she had been held hostage for hours, beaten and raped by her estranged husband Barry Clark.
"She got her hind end whipped, plain and simple," Breedlove says. "She pushed me back, told me it was my fault, I hit her, we rolled on the ground a little bit."
During her arrest Wednesday Breedlove claimed she hit Chandra out of self-defense.
But police say it wasn't self-defense and Breedlove's involvement went far beyond just getting in a fight with Chandra. They say Breedlove admitted that she plotted with Barry, watched as Chandra walked into her home in Morrisvale where Barry was allegedly hiding and that Breedlove waited in her own home, next door where she could hear Chandra scream, knowing that Chandra was being held hostage, along with four other people. Two of the hostages were Breedlove's kids.
"She certainly had the knowledge and made no effort to try and stop it," Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller says. He also says Breedlove helped Barry hide evidence after the crime.
More arrests are expected. Breedlove has been charged with five counts of aiding in kidnapping.
