The saying goes, when life is gets hard just put one foot in front of the other and keep going. It's a message John Gunno has taken to heart.
“I call it water therapy,” he said.
Seven years ago, fed up his excessive drinking and smoking, John decided to quit cold turkey. No patches, no AA meetings, no therapists.
It is 100% willpower, he said.
Instead he turned to walking. Friends said it couldn't be done. John let his feet do the talking.
“One day I started walking and it’s the best medication I've ever taken in my life,” he said.
Now, the river is his therapist, the time on the Boulevard his AA meetings, the pavement is his nicotine patch.
“When you walk by the river everything in you just disappears,” John said
Sober and smoke free for seven years, all that walking and gazing out over the river has given John a new view on life.
I just love life now,” he said.
Something he won't let out of his sight as he continues to walk, one foot in front of the other.
