The South Central Regional Jail had its first escape since 1994 last night, but inmate Charles Jarrett had a short run.
Robbery charges against Jarrett had been dismissed in magistrate court, but then immediately re-filed.
He was put back in civilian clothes and was about to be released when a sergeant caught the mistake. He told a guard to put him in a holding cell and back in an orange jail uniform.
The guard who put him back in a holding cell left the cell door open and Jarrett walked out into a booking release area and convinced a third officer he was being released with two other prisoners.
That guard escorted him out through two other pairs of locked doors. He walked out only to be caught by a South Charleston cop who noticed him running along Corridor G.
Jail Administrator Steve Tucker says officers will face disciplinary action if it is determined they violated jail policy.
Roger Sheperd broke out of jail in 1994 by using a rope made of dental floss. The escape earned him the nickname Spiderman.
