A 38-year-old Chicago man was critically injured Monday morning when his van overturned on the West Virginia turnpike near Chelyan.
The driver was thrown from the southbound vehicle when it hit a guardrail and then flipped over the median wall just north of the Kanawha county turnpike toll both.
The driver was rushed to a Charleston hospital where he is in the intensive care unit. There were patches of ice on the roadway when the accident happened. Troopers suspect the wreck was weather-related. They have called in an accident reconstructionist to investigate. The driver's name is not being released until family members are notified.
