The Barbour County Sheriff's Department is investigating possible human remains found in a shallow grave Tuesday afternoon
The department says it was flooded with calls that it could be the remains of missing 3-year-old Aliayah Lunsford who vanished from her home in the nearby Lewis County, but deputies tell Eyewitness News it is "in no, way shape or form" connected to the Lunsford case.
Deputies say they found what appears to be the leg of a human in the grave along the Tygart River in Arden around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
An anthropological team from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC has been called in to help remove the remains.
Some evidence was collected by the Sheriff's Office and then the scene was secured for the night. Operations to recover the remains will resume on Wednesday when the team arrives.
They're asking anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area to call 304-457-2352 and ask to speak to Chief Deputy Brett Carpenter.
