The Bayer CropScience plant in Institute has a new man in charge of safety. Bayer announced Steven Hedrick will become head of the Institute Industrial Park on March 1. The West Virginia native is now head of operational safety at Bayer's huge facility in Baytown, Texas. Institute site leader Nick Crosby will move to a new role at the company's North American headquarters. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has said safety lapses under his watch at the Institute plant contributed to an explosion in 2008 that killed two workers. The company says it's moving on schedule to meet its promise to cut the stockpile of MIC at the plant. The deadly chemical that killed thousands in an accident in India has made plant neighbors uneasy for years.
