Ready to Runfrom Eyewitness News Online WV Freshman Finalist for Magazine Award

Fourteen year old Ryan Switzer is modest. He says he's blessed with talent, desire and a good work ethic, but when he's between the hash marks, it just comes naturally.
Ryan Switzer, Freshman Running Back, "I just run." Switzer is just a freshman, but he's already the starting running back for the George Washington High School Patriots. Steve Edwards, Jr., GWHS Head Coach, "When I was his age there is no way I was ready." On the field, Ryan is ready despite a few rookie mistakes. In fact, for his age he's such an elite player, Ryan is among only ten finalists for a big honor. Sports Illustrated Kid of the Year which could land him on the cover of the magazine. Ryan isn't out campaigning for votes. Ryan Switzer, "I'm leaving that up to my family and my parents. I don't want to get into it." All the attention clearly, a bit embarrassing. Ryan says right now he just wants to focus on the rest of the season and improve his game. Steve Edwards, Jr., "What he's done is taken the next step. He's worked to better his talents, one of hardest working kids." Not that Ryan isn't flattered by the chance to showcase himself and sprint even quicker to his goal of playing at the college level, but he's quick to point out it takes a team to win and a team to shine. Ryan Switzer, "I'd be lying if I said I didn't want it but it can be humbling you just got to keep your head on straight." Voting for SI Kid of the Year closes October 6, 2009.
