While prices at the pump are holding steady for the 4th of July weekend, AAA says the poor economy will decrease the number of Americans traveling this 4th of July holiday by almost two percent. The auto club says 700-thousand fewer people will be on the road than during the same period last year. Even with holiday travel down, a lot of people will still be on the road.
AAA estimates more than 37 million will make a trip of 50 miles or more. It was busy at these Turnpike toll booths and at a nearby rest area-- where it was hard to park. The national Lundberg survey says the price of a gallon of gasoline is sticking at $2.66 for regular unleaded. That sounds a lot better than last year when it was about $4.10 a gallon. Plane travel is expected to be up almost five percent due to declining airfares. This holiday is often the busiest time of the year for auto travelers because almost all school age children are on summer break.
