BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOOR

Patrick McMurtry

When you sit down at an area restaurant, sometimes it’s hard to tell how it rates when it comes to cleanliness and health standards.

Taisha Walker takes you inside for a closer look. Each week, her special Eyewitness News feature “Behind the Kitchen Door” shows diners how restaurants fared during their health inspections. An eatery that receives a good rating and displays proper food safety is surprised with our Clean Kitchen of the Week Award.

Tune in to “Behind the Kitchen Door” every Thursday at 10 p.m., and see the latest stories online here at WCHSTV.com.

Tricky Fish in Charleston received four critical and ten non-critical violations. Health inspectors found food buildup between equipment. They also said the can opener was dirty and employees weren't washing their hands before wearing gloves.

Tricky Fish cleaned up and received a good rating.

Dwight's Restaurant in St. Albans had three critical and five non-critical violations. Inspectors said mayonnaise used for sandwiches wasn't up to temperature and employees aren't wearing gloves properly.

Dwight's Restaurant straightened up and received a good rating.

Our Clean Kitchen of the Week Award goes to Let's Eat in Huntington. Janet McCormick, owner of the Heritage Station shop, said employees make it a habit of keeping the kitchen tidy.

"We just make sure that we clean up after ourselves every time we make a sandwich, we're always putting things away and wiping up as we go along," McCormick said.

The Naanada, a sandwich wrap on Indian naan bread, along with fruit infused water are popular items on the menu.
