BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOOR

Patrick McMurtry

When you sit down at an area restaurant, sometimes it’s hard to tell how it rates when it comes to cleanliness and health standards.

Taisha Walker takes you inside for a closer look. Each week, her special Eyewitness News feature “Behind the Kitchen Door” shows diners how restaurants fared during their health inspections. An eatery that receives a good rating and displays proper food safety is surprised with our Clean Kitchen of the Week Award.

Tune in to “Behind the Kitchen Door” every Thursday at 10 p.m., and see the latest stories online here at WCHSTV.com.

Hometown Country Diner in Clendenin received eight critical and 12 non-critical violations.

Health inspectors found eggs being stored above food. They also said refrigerated meat and gravy didn't have date marks. Hometown Country Diner cleaned up and got a fair rating.

Rockin' Robins Burgers & Shakes in Clendenin had four critical and six non-critical violations. Inspectors said the ice machine was filthy and certain food items didn't have date marks. Rockin' Robins cleaned up and got an excellent rating.

Our Clean Kitchen of the Week Award goes to Fat Patty's in Huntington.

Derek Artrip, manager at Fat Patty's, said his staff works hard to maintain a clean kitchen.

"We watch our temperatures on all of our equipment," Artrip said. "We watch how we handle the food. We pay attention to all those things. We clean daily, and it's something we provide to our guests because we want them to have an enjoyable experience and make sure they're getting proper and safe food."

Artrip said the restaurant's burgers are a popular hit with customers. The Bayou burger, which is made with Cajun spices, was recently voted best burger in West Virginia.
