An American soldier who was killed 73 years ago in World War II was given a proper burial Saturday at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial Cemetery.

For the family of Shirley Bailey, it means closure after so many years thinking they would never see this moment.

A sniper hit Bailey in the head while he was trying to help a wounded soldier. His body was missed during recovery sweeps and he laid there for the next three years.

A German found him, buried him and notified the military.

The military dug his body up and re-buried him under a cross in a Belgian cemetery. They then found out who his body belonged to after comparing DNA with the family.

Bailey’s body was brought to West Virginia earlier this week before being laid to rest on Saturday.
