West Virginia State Police said troopers shot and killed a man in Braxton County who charged at officers with a knife.

The incident happened about 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the Rosedale area.

Police received reports of shots fired Wednesday night into or at a residence of a relative to the shooter. Troopers were called back about 4 a.m. Thursday and found a man who was on the porch of a neighbor's house armed with a knife. Police said he retreated into the house, which was vacant, and barricaded himself into a bedroom.

More troopers were called onto the scene, and they had a negotiating session trying to persuade the man to come out of the bedroom where he was barricaded.

About 6:30 a.m. Thursday, the man came out of the bedroom but did not surrender. State Police said he was waving the knife and yelling. There were four state troopers in the house when the individual charged them with the knife. Three troopers fired their guns. The man died at the scene.

State Police are continuing their investigation and are not sure what provoked the situation. The name of the individual has not been released.
