The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office identified the skeletal remains found in the Wayne National Forest.

The remains were confirmed to be those of Billy R. Harper, 43, of Kitts Hill, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

A hunter found the remains in the forest in the Aid township in November 2017.

The sheriff’s office said the skull had two bullet holes. One bullet hole appeared to be an entry wound and the other an exit hole. Another bone, what appeared to be a femur, also was found. A gun also was found in the area.

The sheriff's office said Harper had some unusual emotional activity just before his disappearance. Investigators said they found a letter of apology in Harper's vehicle in his handwriting.
