Huntington police said a 12-year old girl was charged with the arson after an altar in a church was damaged by fire.

The fire occurred Monday evening at St. John's Episcopal Church. The Huntington Fire Department responded quickly, and the fire was extinguished.

The Rev. Lisa Graves said it appeared some sort of kindling was used to start a fire on the main altar. The altar was badly damaged, but there was minimal damage outside of the area of the fire. Graves said they will have to paint and replace some carpet that was damaged.

The church is planning a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Regular Sunday services are unaffected.

Police said the name of the juvenile will not be released.
