Phillip Casto, charged with murder in the shooting death of Jennifer Evans in September 2015, was sentenced to life in prison without mercy Thursday in Putnam County, the county's Prosecuting Attorney's Office said.

Evans was found shot in her Teays Valley home in September 2015, and Casto was taken into custody near Boston and later charged with murder.

Casto previously entered a Kennedy plea, a rule in which a defendant does not have to outline to the court circumstances surrounding the crime and what makes him guilty of that crime.

As part of the agreement, Casto pleaded guilty to first-degree murder which carries a life sentence. Sentencing is scheduled March 30. At that time, the judge will decide if the sentence will be with or without mercy, which will determine is Casto will be eligible for parole after 15 years.

Eyewitness News Reporter Gil McClanahan spoke with Evans' mother in January about her daughter's murder.
