Area under Interstate 64 in downtown Charleston could be renovated
CHARLESTON, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
The area under Interstate 64 near downtown Charleston could soon be renovated.
Organizers said the plans are to renovate and transform the area under the I-64 overpass from Kanawha Boulevard to Washington Street. The plan has been labeled the “Gallery 64” project.
The work took about 18 months of planning and research by staff members at Charleston Main Streets. The project was inspired by Charleston's Peer to Pier murals.
Organizers said the goal is to connect the West Side of Charleston to the city’s downtown.
Right now, organizers are working on spreading awareness and sharing the plans with the public. They hope to transform the area with more art, better lighting and space that can be used for all different types of community events.
