Game 19: Chapmanville wins first state championship in school history

No. 2 Chapmanville held off a late charge by top-seeded Fairmont Senior to win its first West Virginia State Championship.

The Tigers (27-1) were able to sink late free throws to hold off the Polar Bears (25-1) to win the Class AA championship 69-60.

The Tigers led by 14 with just over 3 minutes remaining before Fairmont Senior when on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just six, but Chapmanville were able to but the Polar Bears away with clutch free throw shooting late.

Chapmanville shot the ball well throughout the game. The Tigers shot 54.5 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range, and 70 percent from the free throw line.

Drew Williamson scored 28 points on 12-17 shooting to lead all scorers. Williamson averaged 27 points per game during the state tournament.

Big man Obinna Anochili-Killen scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Tigers.

Fairmont Senior was led by Jalen Bridges and Zyon Dobbs who scored 16 apiece.
