Summer Fun 101: Little Creek Park
SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
Continuing our Summer Fun 101 series, Eyewitness News is taking a look at activities you can do around the Mountain State.
For residents of Kanawha County, there is a hidden gem right in your back yard.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, many people are settling in to the swing of summer. For sixth grader Maddie Smith, that means spending most afternoons on the softball diamond at Little Creek Park.
Little Creek Park in South Charleston is tucked away behind Little Creek Golf Course. The big draw is some of the best turf softball and baseball fields in the area.
The Smith family said without it, they just couldn't get the practice in they need.
"Best facilities around really with the turf and we can come up here pretty much anytime as long as it's not raining,” Patrick Smith said.
Besides softball and baseball fields, Little Creek has two basketball and tennis courts near the park entrance, but if you go a little deeper along the winding roads you find what really sets the park apart: an 18-hole disc golf course that offers a challenge for even seasoned golfers.
And if that isn't enough to get you off the couch, Little Creek has one of the best soap box derby racing facilities in the state, with a lighted track and facilities for handicap races.
“Couple times a week we get up here in the summer time just to get outside instead of in,” Smith said.
That’s great advice for anyone looking to be a little more active or try something a little different this summer that won't hurt your wallet.
The park is open from March 1 through October 3, seven days a week from 8:30 in the morning to 10:30 at night and the fields can be reserved for scheduled games.
