Former Putnam County elementary school secretary charged with embezzlement
WINFIELD, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
Former Confidence Elementary School Secretary Malinda Legg has been charged with embezzlement and falsifying accounts.
A criminal complaint said she confessed to taking cash collected at the Confidence Elementary School Carnival in October 2016. That money would have been used for field trips and classroom supplies, but Legg said she used it to pay for a scam she got caught up in.
Legg told investigators she covered up the theft by altering financial reports and bank statements. An audit by Putnam County Schools shows $8,368.77 was missing from the school's bank account.
A spokesperson for Putnam County Schools said Legg resigned from her position July of this year.
