Nature store and fence company open in Putnam County

Two new Putnam County businesses are helping get people prepared for spring gardening and landscaping.

Birds, Blooms and Butterflies is a nature lover's paradise.

Everything inside is designed to attract songbirds to yards.

Owner Robert O'Quinn, took the opportunity to leave corporate America last year, so he could find a way to share his love of nature, with the rest of the world.

O'Quinn traveled across more than 15 states, in search of unique, American-made products to sell in his store.

It's safe to say, he found those products.

"We have song-bird related products like houses, baths and feeders. Specialty feed all comes from an Amish farm, right across the border," said O'Quinn.

And if gardens and nature isn't your thing, there's also jewelry: earrings made from porcupine quills and purses made from butterfly wings.

O'Quinn said all the butterflies lived full lives.

He added, "If you can't differentiate yourself from the big box stores, you're not going to make it."

Family- owned Whittington Fence & Outdoor Living is also separating itself from big-box stores.

Roger Whittington operates the store, along with his two brothers.

He said, like Birds, Blooms and Butterflies, they're also selling products, you can't find anywhere else.

Whittington Fence has "anything from fence to patio, to stonework and even wrought ironwork."

They also have stores in Elkview and Beckley, but Hurricane is their newest location.

Whittington said they want to be a part of the community, and plan on donating a portion of fence sales to local humane associations.

Whittington Fence & Outdoor Living is located behind Appalachian Tire, beside CVS in Teays Valley.

Birds, Blooms & Butterflies is located on Teays Valley Road, across from Valley Park.

Their phone number is 304-562-BIRD.
