Hardware store opens in Putnam County

It seems like hardware stores have become a thing of the past.

But two business partners are going against the grain and opening one of their own.

Eric Tarr and his business partner Dale Vance opened General Hardware in Winfield about three weeks ago.

Tarr said Winfield is a small community with a big need.

He says the community needed a place they could run in and grab supplies - and you don't have to be an experienced carpenter to shop there.

Customers agree.

Michael Worley said, "I'm not such a do- it- yourselfer, but [they have] tools and they have paint, that's right here."

From tools to paint to toiletries, there's something for everyone.

Tarr said they are also "female friendly" - selling lotions and finger nail polish remover.

Eric Tarr owns Generations Physical Therapy and several other businesses in Putnam County.

He knows the people and tailored the store, to fit their needs.

He also says location is key.

"They [customers] come to the door and say, 'Wow I don't have to drive to the valley anymore.'"

Before they opened the store, customers had to travel to Teays Valley, St. Albans - even Nitro, to go to a hardware store.

Tarr believes he's providing an alternative to big-box hardware stores, that may be overwhelming to some.

His customer Michael Worley agrees. "Convenience, time... it just makes it more beneficial for us."

Eric Tarr is looking to fill some positions for the Hardware Store, as well as in some of his other businesses.
