A West Virginia State Police official said a trooper resigned and an internal investigation is under way following allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a witness in a homicide case.

State Police chief of field services Maj. V.S. Deeds said Trooper W.G. Hash resigned Tuesday. Deeds said Hash was investigating a homicide case in which the suspect's wife witnessed the killing.

A plea deal was met in that case last week after Hash turned over evidence that included photos, text messages and a recorded phone call allegedly involving the trooper and the suspect's wife, according to defense attorney Abe Saad. The suspect pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to the maximum of 15 years in prison.

Deeds said the results of the internal investigation will not be made public.
