Game 21: Huntington wins first state title since 2000

For the first time since the 2000 season, the Huntington Highlanders are Class AAA state champions.

No. 1 Huntington High used a big fourth quarter to secure a 72-54 win over No. 2 Buckhannon-Upshur in the title game Saturday night.

At the half, the Highlanders and Buccaneers were tied at 24, and after the third quarter Huntington led by just four. But in the fourth quarter, the Highlanders doubled up Buckhannon-Upshur outscoring the Buccaneers 28-14 on their way to victory.

Jordyn Dawson led the way for Huntington notching a double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Dawson was dominant during the state tournament averaging 24 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Huntington’s Mariah Harmon had another big game for the Highlanders with 19 points. She also had 6 steals and 6 rebounds.

Shooting 11-12 from the free throw line, Lexi Sheffield scored 14 for Huntington.

Huntington won its three tournament games by an average of 15 points, with the biggest coming in the opening round in a 57-34 win over No. 8 Spring Mills. The Highlander’s closest game come in the semifinal in a 45-41 win over No. 4 South Charleston.

This was Huntington second straight trip to the championship game. Last season the Highlanders fell to Morgantown 61-56.
