It's that time of the year when you will see more yellow school buses on the roads.

Thousands of students in Braxton and Cabell counties headed back to school Thursday morning.

Bus drivers in Cabell County were sent off with well wishes as they left the bus garage for their first routes of the new school year.

Among the people sending the drivers off was the district's new superintendent Ryan Saxe.

"I know firsthand the level of commitment our employees have because I came through this school district. I'm a product of Cabell County,” Saxe said.

The morning's rain didn't keep smiles off many of the students faces as they arrived to their schools for the first day.

"I figure we have a lot of nervous bellies, but I think we're all super excited to get started,” said Kristen Giles, principal at Cox Landing Elementary School.

It was an exciting day in the classrooms too as students met their teachers, greeted classmates and learned the classroom rules.

Ella Giles, who is a fifth grade student at Cox Landing Elementary, said she is happy to see her friends she hasn't seen all summer and to start learning new things.

"My favorite thing about school is mostly, this is basically my favorite subject, math. I think it's fun because you can do different ways of learning it,” said 10-year-old Ella Giles.

As for big changes within the district, Saxe said students and families won't see any.

"They're not going to notice any big changes other than the fact that our staff is as always excited to see students. They're excited to get back in their classrooms, back in their schools,” Saxe said. “We missed the kids over the summer, and so we're excited that our kids are coming back into our classrooms and we're ready to get to work."
