Summer break has officially come to an end for many kids, but that doesn’t mean the fun should stop.

Putnam County Schools teachers are encouraging students to get involved in after-school activities.

Students at Winfield Elementary School in Putnam County were eager to get in the building and see what's new.

"We teach all of our children to be leaders of their lives through the ‘Leader in Me’ process,” said Candi Hatfield, Winfield Elementary School Principal. “We do have a new something in our county this year - PLCs, which all that is is about building relationships and focusing on student learning and student achievement."

For those in middle school, put your brain to the test during the county's STEM Expo, which is in March.

Around 80 projects from students in the county's four middle schools will be on display.

"It's an opportunity for all of our students to really explore something that interests them,” said Erika Klose, Winfield Middle School science teacher. “We try to have lots of different categories. Students can do experiments or they can build a Rube Goldberg Machine or even write a science fiction story. We try to hit the interests of all of our students."

If you’re interested in robotics, Winfield High School has a team.

"There's only four of us in West Virginia. The students can just start coming to meetings - sometime in September we'll start,” said Tina Kirk, Winfield High School teacher and Co-Founder of Putnam Robotics. "They can work on the electrical system. They can machine parts. They can build things with wood. They can write essays for the team. They can create videos, edit videos. There's computer programming for the robot, so there's a lot of aspects."

There are many other activities available for students after-school.
