All I'm Sayin'
November 16, 2011
November to Remember?

...is will the programs that have a legitimate shot at surviving the season please stand up? This is the month that has often separated the pretenders from the contenders. Why November? Because it's the first Sweeps month of the tv season. Sweeps months are November, February, May, and July. Those are the months that are actually tabulated by Nielsen, the ratings service giant that surveys a % of the viewing populace, and a pivotal time for the broadcast networks to position their strongest programming to secure higher advertising dollars. We're talking about multi-millions of dollars too. When it comes to whether or not a program should be renewed past November, often it's not a simple decision to make. Sure, it's easy this season for shows like Once Upon A Time, New Girl, and X Factor but what about Pan Am, Man Up, and Allen Gregory? All 3 of those programs follow something that is much higher rated but they're each losing an unhealthy amount of audience. Some would argue that viewing habits have changed so drastically that broadcasters and advertisers can no longer place the same importance on the audience retention statistic. If a show can't garner an amount of ratings enough to survive on its own, then it deserves to go; that seems to be the current sentiment. And if it loses audience in the neighborhood of 50%, then its fate certainly is set. Is there anything a loyal viewer can do to stay the execution? By and large no, but there have been rare occasions in the vast history of broadcast where a "Save Our Show" campaign actually worked. A fun web site that covers that very topic is http://www.savethatshow.com/
Next time we'll look at some of the veteran shows that are on the proverbial bubble...Glee and Body of Proof, I'm talking to you.
We have some very nice deals currently listed on Hey It's Half Off. There are 7 restaurants and 1 bakery where you can eat for half price. In this economy, that's a heck of a deal. Find all the deals here http://www.heyitshalfoff.com/ simply by clicking on the drop down arrow and selecting either Charleston or Huntington.
Since November is our topic please don't forget that it's both Hospice Awareness and COPD (emphysema and bronchitis) Awareness month, among others. To learn more about either of these please visit www.copd.com and http://www.hospicefoundation.org/ This area has some wonderful Hospice organizations...Hospice Care WV, Hospice of Huntington, and Community Hospice serving eastern KY and southern OH, just to name a few.
And since November unofficially kicks off the cold weather season I went to one of our foremost authorities on all things weather-related, Chief Meteorologist Jim Barach, to ask about what we might expect this winter and his reply was, "This winter looks to be dominated by a La Nina pattern, where the water along the west coast is cooler than normal. That will deflect the jet stream to the north which will keep the coldest air to the north and west. The net result looks to be a milder than normal winter for us. There will be above normal precipitation, but a fair amount of it will be falling as rain instead of snow."
Simpsons quote: Homer, "Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It’s what separates us from the animals…except the weasel."
