"NYPD Blue" continues to set new standards for the police drama genre. Co-created and executive-produced by Steven Bochco and David Milch, the show broke every record with 27 Emmy nominations in its first season. Since its network debut on September 21, 1993, it won the coveted award for Outstanding Drama Series in its sophomore year and received Emmy Awards for writing and directing in the fourth and fifth seasons. The show has received an astounding 82 Emmy nominations, winning 19.

Set against the gritty and volatile backdrop of New York City, "NYPD Blue" powerfully portrays realistic characters devoting themselves to the pursuit of justice while struggling to maintain an ever-elusive sense of humanity.

Four-time Emmy Award-winner Dennis Franz plays Detective Andy Sipowicz. A widower raising his elementary-school-aged son, Theo, Sipowicz has battled his share of demons, including alcoholism, divorce and loss of loved ones. He's also born the unique challenges of being a detective in New York City.

This year several new characters will be introduced, the first of whom is John Clark, a novice cop played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar. After winning a quick promotion to detective, he becomes Sipowicz's new partner, replacing Detective Danny Sorenson (Rick Schroder) who was found murdered early in the 2001-2002. Further complicating matters is the fact that the new cop's father is a hardboiled detective in the Bronx who was once Sipowicz's arch rival and who's furious that his son is paired with his old nemesis.

Also returning this season is Emmy-winner Gordon Clapp who portrays Detective Greg Medavoy, a man constantly brimming with anticipation and riddled with anxiety over life's smallest obstacles. By contrast his partner, Detective Baldwin Jones -- played by Henry Simmons -- brings quiet strength and a commanding presence to the precinct.

Bill Brochtrup portrays public administrative assistant John Irvin, a gentle and compassionate gay man who cares deeply for his co-workers.

Garcelle Beauvais portrays Assistant District Attorney Valerie Haywood, a stickler for the letter of the law. Though she's anxious to put the bad guy behind bars, she has no patience for cops who take the law into their own hands.

Charlotte Ross portrays Detective Connie McDowell, a cop with a free spirit who is tough as nails. Depending on the suspect, she can be a sharp-shooter or a beautiful decoy.

And Esai Morales returns as Lieutenant Tony Rodriguez who brings a wealth of experience, training and knowledge from his days as a narcotics detective in a crime-laden area of the city.

"NYPD Blue" is a Steven Bochco Production, co-created with David Milch. Bochco serves as executive producer with Mark Tinker and former New York City police detective Bill Clark.
